TWO ALL-ACADEMY THEME PDWS ON THE CALL FOR RESPONSIBLE RESEARCH

We invite you to two PDW sessions at the AOM to discuss the recent call for “Responsible Research in Business and Management” (RRBM). Please read the RRBM position paper for the background of these two PDWs.

Session 1: Improving Lives via Responsible Research in Business & Management: A Debate to Illuminate an “Ecosystem Path” Forward (proposal for a description of PDW).

Sunday, Aug 12th, 11:00am – 1:00pm in Hyatt Regency Chicago, Room Regency A

Many of us are concerned that research in management too often lacks scientific credibility and societal value. But there is ongoing debate both about this assessment and what if anything should be done if it’s accurate. A group of faculty from across five core business disciplines in 23 business-schools in ten countries recently launched a call for “Responsible Research in Business and Management.” Please join eleven Past Presidents of AOM to discuss and debate on this proposal for creating a research “eco-system” to encourage more “responsible” research. To catalyze the discussion, several Past Presidents will offer their different views on the proposal. Then we will break into small discussion groups led by one of the eleven past presidents:  Paul Adler (2013), Ray Aldag (1992), Tom Cummings (2006), Angelo DeNisi (2009), Mike Hitt (1997), Tom Lee (2008), Jone Pearce (2003), Debra Shapiro (2016), Bill Starbuck (1998), Anne Tsui (2012) and Jim Walsh (2010).

Session 2: Responsible Research Call to Action: Improving Lives by Improving Research Impact (proposal for a description of this PDW)

Sunday, Aug 12 2018 4:00PM – 6:00PM in Hyatt Regency Chicago, Room Regency A

How can we make sure that our research strengthens organizational capacity to improve the lives of people who work in them, and those who are the beneficiaries of their products and services and the production process? The purpose of this AAT PDW is to advance the call for “responsible research” that produces both credible and useful knowledge to enable organizations as a force for good in our societies — for the health and well-being of employees and other stakeholders. In this PDW we will take up the RRBM’s call by identifying specific actions for sustaining a responsible research ecosystem that supports the vision of “responsible research for better business and a better world.” This will be a working session with small groups led by facilitators to identify actions that can facilitate responsible research. The PDW facilitators include Mary Uhl-Bien, Texas Christian U., Anne S. Tsui, U. of Notre Dame, Sim B. Sitkin, Duke U., William H. Glick, Rice U., Srilata Zaheer, U. of Minnesota, and Ingmar Bjorkman, Aalto U.

No pre-registration is necessary for either PDW. Please bring colleagues and friends. We look forward to seeing you there.
